The Robert Chapman Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramic Art

The School of Art and Design in the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is seeking candidates for The Robert Chapman Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramic Art. The Turner Teaching Fellow will be an emerging artist with an MFA or equivalent degree. Broad-based knowledge of contemporary art is expected. Prior teaching experience is welcome. The fellowship is non-tenure track and renewable up to three years. The fellowship is $35,000 dollars per year, plus a stipend up to $3,000 per year for professional development. A studio space will be provided with full access to ceramic facilities.

Established in honor of Robert Chapman Turner, distinguished Professor Emeritus at Alfred, the Turner Teaching Fellowship is a full-time faculty positionwithin the Division of Ceramic Art. All ceramic genres are eligible for consideration. Expertise in 3d modeling and digital prototyping is desirable. Teaching responsibilities will consist of classes at the undergraduate level. The candidate’s area of expertise will factor into the teaching assignments.

Qualifications

Required: MFA or equivalent degree; emerging record of scholarly/creative productivity appropriate to teaching at the college level; ability to work collaboratively within the department, the school, the university, and the community; to communicate with and mentor students on all levels. Preferred:Experience teaching and advising students.

We are seeking proposals for Student Perpsectives, the student-led programming thread that was so successful at the NCECA Conference in Tampa. Many of the presentations in 2011 were standing room only, and the NCECA office has received many positive comments on the quality and variety of presentations given by our student members.

For the 2012 conference in Seattle, Student Perspectives will be held in a room that seats almost 300 people. We are seeking presentation proposals from students at all levels, on a variety of topics. This is a great opportunity for students to present at a national conference, gain both experience and exposure in front of an international audience, build a resume and share their passion and expertise!!

Second year ceramics grad Kevin Bouck is participating in an upcoming show at the RISD Gelman Gallery. The show's opening is on September 29th from 6 pm until 9 pm. Bouck's performance, entitled "Isolations" will begin that evening at 6pm and last 30 minutes. Judit Kollo, another second grad, will be performing along side him.

Bouck's statement regarding the work is as follows:

Numbers, letters, and words are held within the mechanism of a stiff inner being. The diaphragm is exhausted, while the spleen feels dead and the liver yearns to grow. There is no controlling the sound of thunderous claps. Sometimes they scream throughout the night. Clap, clap, clap, clap–four times a million–red hands, red face, and red memories. This is isolation; it is a layered patch set like a crust of earth, sleeping through spectacle, exhausted while thick in breath. Placements are indications of an interior observance, a recollection of memory. There are divisions–these mute shouts of piercing hollow shrieks.

This self-directed residency is designed to provide a ceramic artist with studio access, as they make the transition from or between academic settings. Furthermore, the program is intended to allow a resident the time and space to pursue a body of work in a creative and energetic environment while enhancing the art program at Midwestern State University. The accepted artist will participate within the ceramics area as an informal collaborator and mentor for students, while working in the common studio space.

• Will attend opening receptions and special events
• Will be responsible for all non-ceramic related expenses (housing and food)
• Will give one public lecture on her/his work
• Will donate one piece for the permanent collection of MSU

• Three large electric kilns
• Two smaller electric kilns
• Large Brent slab roller
• Two extruders
• Three pugmills
• Soldner mixer
• Separate well equipped glaze room
• Two station spray booth
• Materials and clay mixing/storage room

The program also offers experiences in oxidation, reduction, wood, raku, and soda firing processes.
A 5,000 square foot covered kiln yard furnished with the following:
• Two 40 cubic foot Geil car kilns
• A 30 cubic foot “fast fire” wood kiln
• Two older updraft kilns
• A 30 cubic foot downdraft soda kiln
• A 3 cubic foot cone 10 test kiln

Requirements and application:
A BFA in ceramics is required, an MFA is preferred. All applicant reviews will be based on portfolio review and individual merit.

has been created and developed for over a year with Hayward Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, South London Gallery, Tate Britain and Whitechapel Gallery as part of the Louis Vuitton Young Arts Project.

The way the website works is thus: artists upload their work and share it with an online community in the 'Projects' section of the website where well-known critics and artists will choose their favorite works to highlight. If you don't feel like submitting something you can check out the 'Ideas factory' and follow exhibitions and projects as they evolve.

The site is off to promising start, one of the first posts in the Ideas Factory is a series of short films about Tracey Emin's Love is What You Want show at the Hayward Gallery. In the videos, Tracey talks about her ideas and gives you a behind the scenes look at the installation of the exhibit. Emin explains: "This is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about contemporary art and get involved. It would have been amazing to have had this chance when I was that age."

Another impressive aspect of the site is the 'Experts' section where young artists can find out how people working in the industry got where they are, ranging from curators to critics, to technicians and artists. The Creatomatic Method
The Creatomatic is a software designed to accelerate the imagination and prompt new inventions. It works like a slot machine, but instead of matching symbols, it will randomly juxtapose diagrams of two everyday objects from a selection of thousands. Through free association, the two objects can prompt the invention of an entirely new object, which can be practical or nonsensical. Inspired by the accidental nature of creativity, the Creatomatic uses the technique of surprise to overcome habitual ways of thinking and short circuit rational control.

The Creatomatic Workshop
Learn how to turn yourself into an idea machine. In this workshop we will freshen up our neurons and get our creative juices flowing by practicing the Creatomatic Method. Artists Jacob Tonski and Nova Jiang will guide participants step by step from the initial spark of inspiration through the iterative stages of prototyping in order to make your invention a reality.

Jacob Tonski is a pragmatic optimist whose creative work explores balance as an inherently dynamic process. His mechatronic and interactive human-scale objects probe ideas of equality and origins of power with which we must dance and negotiate. Tonski holds an MFA from the Design | Media Arts department at UCLA. Formerly a Technical Director at Pixar Animation Studios, he is now an assistant professor of Art and Interactive Media Studies at Miami University, Ohio.

Nova Jiang’s work engages with the evolving definition of public space. Concerned with fostering a sense of community, she often creates situations that allow people to relate in unexpected ways. She wants to inspire people’s curiosity about each other as well as their everyday surroundings through play. Quite often, she succeeds in transforming strangers into collaborators. Her most recent projects focus on sharing the tools of artistic production as well as methodologies for creative thinking. Nova Jiang is currently a fellow at Eyebeam. The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University (IUB)
invites applications for a full-time non tenure- track position, with
an emphasis in Ceramic Art, commencing in the Academic Year of 2011 -
2012. This is a one-year position. The candidate selected will be
welcomed as a significant partner in Ceramics program. We seek strong
artists and teachers who are qualified to engage with students at all
levels. We have a BA, BFA and nationally ranked MFA program in
Ceramics. Successful candidates will teach 5
courses during the academic year. Teaching responsibilities will
consist primarily of advanced undergraduate level courses in ceramics.
Instruction of graduate level seminars is also possible. Attendance at
critiques for BFA and MFA students is expected. Studio space will be
provided.

Preferred Qualifications:
A broad understanding of contemporary art and theory and the history of
ceramics within the broader scope of 3D media that indicates a thorough
knowledge of traditional and innovative modes of art making.

Requirements:
Qualified candidates must have an MFA. At least one year of teaching

Is it ever a compliment to describe a work of art as “drab”? Not really, but every rule has its exception, and, in this case, these jubilant homespun ceramic-and-wood sculptures—a collaboration between Taylor Davis and Nicole Cherubini—are it. Amorphous, putty-colored slabs of clay are mounted onto wooden bases and hung on the wall; freestanding square ceramics punctured with holes (rolled posters are casually stuck in them) are the color of burnt toast. There are a few snazzy grace notes: crumpled forms glazed in red, white, and blue suggest an ersatz French flag, and a rectangular pink box appears to split the surface of a log. The over-all mood suggests a punk-rock George Ohr. Through May 14.

Every fall, the RISD Museum sends out a call for submissions for the annual Sitings competition, and students tour the museum with museum staff to select from a menu of sites the one for which to propose an installation. A juror then selects the artwork that will be exhibited in the spring. But between the initial idea and the final installation is a demanding process that goes on independently of class work. “It’s process art,” says Ben Peterson (MFA CR ’11), who collaborated with Lee Johnson (MFA CR ’11) to build one of last year’s installations.

The College seeks a Ceramics Technician to work closely with its ceramics faculty and students

throughout the academic year managing the ceramics studio, beginning Fall 2011. The position

involves repairs and maintenance of the equipment, troubleshooting student problems, instructing

faculty/students how to use the equipment, and responding to faculty requests to meet the needs

of their courses.

Extensive experience working with kilns, clay / glaze materials, and the capacity to use power

tools is required. Applicants should be working artists who are interested in pursuing their

professional work in the studio at the College. A studio is provided for the Technician.

A Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree is required. This is a full-time position during the academic terms

Guldagergaard is an international ceramic research centre for development of ceramic art, craft and design. International artists and designers come for studio residencies, workshops and symposiums focusing on contemporary themes.

Newman Popiashvili Gallery is pleased to present the first New York exhibition of Davis, Cherubini. Taylor Davis and Nicole Cherubini, both accomplished sculptors, started their collaboration in 2006. Their first show was a solo booth at Nada in 2007, which led to Davis, Cherubini: In Contention at the MIT List Visual Arts Center in 2009.

Davis, Cherubini’s exhibition for Newman Popiashvili Gallery is named for the chemical element cobalt; Co with atomic number 27. The highly toxic cobalt oxide, ground for use in ceramic glazes and clay bodies, produces a brilliant blue that has been used in arts and industry for centuries. Through the collaborative nature of the project, Davis, Cherubini defy the transformation of a solo artist's name into a marker of a successful product line.

The inception of Cobalt began in 2010 in Boston when the artists began rolling out large slabs of raw clay. The shapes – the direct and immediate result of collaborative decisions and actions - led to a new body of slabs that materially incorporated color. Working in RISD’s ceramic studio, Davis, Cherubini milled dried pigments into the body of the clay, color now the substance of form. These then become the framework of the exhibition – incorporating other materials, form and sculptural practices.

Brown University master's candidate Courtney Mattison unites her interests in art and environmental studies in her large-scale ceramic coral reef wall installation, on display this spring at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In her downtown Providence loft space, student Courtney Mattison has created an underwater scene not usually visible without a snorkel and diving mask. Two-foot wide sea anemones, a variety of coral species, and big nasty globs of algae stretch floor to ceiling. Each item is a handcrafted ceramic.

Toronto native Jessica Riva Cooper's feminist spin on Jewish folklore will leap out at visitors to the Kniznick Gallery in the Women's Studies Research Center this spring.

Cooper, the third annual Hadassah-Brandeis Institute artist-in-residence, will mine her experience as a Canadian Jew of eastern European descent to take viewers on a visual journey inspired by Yiddish folklore that deals with the mystical and the supernatural. Specifically, she will examine the golem, a creature created to do a person's bidding without question, and the dybbuk, a mischievous spirit that attaches itself to the living, through a female perspective.

Haystack's core summer workshops include one- and two-week sessions in blacksmithing, clay, fibers, glass, graphics, metals, and wood. Classes are open to adults 18 years or older of all skill levels - from beginners to advanced professionals. Studios are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with classes scheduled Monday through Friday. The Haystack community is made up of approximately 85 participants, including staff, students, and internationally known faculty artists. Instructors determine the format of their workshops, as described in the course catalog and on our Summer Sessions by Workshop page. All regular applications are held for review on April 1, and students are placed in workshops following that review. Subsequently, new applications are reviewed as they are received, and students may be accepted up until the day courses. Apply before April 1 to ensure priority consideration.

Annual Student Mentor Exhibition Opening

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts will host an opening reception for its annual exhibition of student and faculty work from this year's Student Mentor Program, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., at the school's Center for Community Programs.

From 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Route 15, the Deer Isle-Stonington High School student Jazz Combo, will provide live music.

Haystack Prepares for 2011 Summer Season

We are busy getting the campus ready for the summer season. Every year Haystack reinvests in its award-winning campus. Over the winter the old visiting artist studio was expanded to accommodate a new digital fabrication lab and adjacently, a new artist space was built, along with a deck and shared walkway. The new building will become the visiting artists studio. Other major projects completed over the winter included an electrical upgrade to the hot shop power supply and replacement of the dye shop deck and stairs.

JOIN US FOR PRE-SESSION

For two weeks each spring, volunteers travel to Haystack's "pre-session." These Haystack friends assist with cleaning, building and repairing the

campus in preparation for the summer sessions.

It's an opportunity to re-kindle old friendships and

to create new ones. Pre-session will be held between May 15-19 and May 22-26. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering, for a day, or for the

entire week-any amount of time is helpful! We'll

provide the room and board in exchange for your

help with getting the campus ready for summer.

As some of you know I am currently living in the city of Chicago working at the fabulous Lillstreet Art Center as their ceramic artist-in-resident. I have recently taken a short break to travel back to the east coast to be the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Artist-in-Residence at The Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis University. I am creating a site specific installation during my stay, culminating in an opening reception on Thursday, April 14, between 5 –7 pm.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Fine Arts

IU Southeast seeks an outstanding artist/educator for a full time ten-month appointment of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning August 2011. This position is a one-year appointment with possibility of renewal. The position requires competence in a wide range of drawing processes/techniques with a secondary emphasis in either ceramics or painting. The successful candidate will teach drawing from beginning to advanced levels, and possibly entry-level courses in color and painting or ceramics, depending on area of expertise.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in representational drawing with conceptually interdisciplinary ideas, will be knowledgeable about contemporary art issues and theory, and will have a broad understanding of new approaches to art making. Applicants must demonstrate strong teaching skills and a broad range of knowledge in drawing (material, technique, form, and content).

This position will require: (1) assessing, advising and mentoring students; (2) participating in recruitment, retention and promotion of the IU Southeast Fine Arts program; (3) maintaining studio facilities; (4) participating in program/school/campus service and student activities and performing related professional duties; (5) maintaining an active professional practice and exhibition record in addition to displaying a commitment to teaching at the University level (6) working collegially with diverse points of view to make decisions.

Qualifications:
MFA degree and graduate TA teaching experience required. At least two years of teaching experience at the college-level beyond graduate assistantships is preferred. An active current professional practice and exhibition record is also required.

Clay residency at MudFire Clayworks

Greetings! I am reaching out to my professorial friends to let you know that MudFire Clayworks will have openings for 4, possibly 5, artists in residence starting this Spring. If you know of any promising clay students graduating this Spring and wanting to move to Atlanta (or know of recent grads who have moved to Atlanta and are looking for a studio situation), please feel free to forward this information to them. We'd love to hear from new clay people!

In brief, here are the highlights of the residency (Ranger) program at MudFire Clayworks:

This is a (minimum) one year opportunity, with the potential to extend for up to three consecutive years.
This is not a paid residency: ie, MudFire does not pay the resident nor does the resident pay MudFire
The resident gets full use of the studio and is welcome to attend all scheduled workshops (8-10 per year) at no charge.
Resident pays only for their clay and for excessive firing (over 4000 cubic inches of glaze firing per month, the firing fee is $0.02/inch)
Clay experience is a must... BFA or MFA with a concentration in clay preferred. Equivalent clay/studio experience with a different resultant degree is fine.
Resident will be required to work in the studio 6 hours per week. This is scheduled in shifts, either one 6-hour or 2 3-hour shifts per week. Typical studio duties involve making glazes, loading/unloading kilns, instructing beginner potters, sitting the gallery, packing and shipping, assisting with workshops and gallery exhibits, maintaining the studio, pottery photography, etc. Nothing too difficut, but provides excellent experience in all facets of operating a full production studio and gallery.
All residents will be trained on the job... they are not expected to be expert kiln loaders or teachers, photographers or glaze mixers... but they must have an excellent attitude, a love of clay, must be friendly to a fault, and exceedingly dependable. Previous work experience of any kind (retail, service, etc) is preferred but not required.

A cover letter with your contact info and a couple of paragraphs explaining 1.) why you and clay are so close 2.) your future clay goals 3.) the very best clay or glaze chemical of all time and 4.) how a residency will help you achieve your muddy goals. This is not a resume, have fun with it.

The RISD Asian Cultural Association (ACA). During the first two weeks of March (3/9-3/20) we are holding an Asian Heritage Week, where there will be events and lectures. One of these events is tea ceremony, where a Japanese tea master will be demonstrating the authentic Japanese tea ceremony. It will be held Monday, March 14th at 7 pm. The Julian Akus Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University presents “Cur.rent Car.ri.er” now on view through March 10. Artist Courtney M. Leonard will be on campus Feb. 10 for a gallery talk at 3 p.m. followed by a reception from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery.
In “Cur.rent Car.ri.er”, Leonard, a member of the Shinnecock Nation, and recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, explores the evolution of language, image, and culture through mixed media pieces of video, audio, and tangible objects. “As an Indigenous woman I navigate three worlds – the first world is that of indigeneity; the second world is one of Western Imperial construction; and the third world is where these two meet in dynamic reaction and adaptation,” the artist says. She reinterprets traditional Shinnecock clay vessels which act as the carriers of historical narrative through the currents of present cultures and on to the next generations.
“This exhibition may be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level, but if you look beyond the lyrical beauty of her paintings, sculptures, and video installations, you will find a seamless drawing together of widely diverse inspirations and her measured yet acerbic social commentary,” says gallery director and curator Elizabeth Peterson. “Imagery of plant and animal and human life with warm and cool colors of the land, sea and sky bring all of her work in clay, metal, canvas, video, into perfect harmony.” The Shinnecock reservation is located at the east end of Long Island, New York. The proximity of the reservation with the Hamptons and NYC puts the varied worlds described by the artist into sharp relief. Says Leonard, “The only way to truly know a people is through the people themselves, objects hold only pieces of time – we carry the rest.”
Akus Gallery is located in the lower level of Shafer at the corner of Windham and Valley Streets in Willimantic. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 1 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The public is invited. Admission is free.
